Frequently asked questions
What does an ophthalmologist do?
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specialises in vision and eye care. They examine eyes, diagnose and treat disease, prescribe medication, and perform surgery, including laser and cataract surgery.
What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?
An optometrist is the clinician many people see for sight tests and routine eye care. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who can provide that care and also perform medical and surgical treatment.
When should you see an ophthalmologist?
Come in if vision changes affect work, driving, or recognising faces, if diabetes or blood pressure is affecting your eyes, or if an eye looks or moves differently. You can also contact the clinic yourself about laser vision correction. Other problems are often referred by an optometrist or GP.
Why consider laser eye surgery?
Glasses and contact lenses get in the way of some kinds of work, sport, and travel. Laser is a long-term option for suitable eyes, decided only after a full assessment. It is not the right operation for every prescription.

What people say after surgery
Although I was already aware of Dr Joseph’s reputation, I wasn’t prepared for how impressive a setup he runs here in Knysna.
Cataract surgery performed, the end result fantastic clear vision. I am really very happy.
I ask myself over and over why I left it for so long. I can see so clearly and I don’t need to wear glasses.
