Cataract and refractive surgeon

Dr Dylan Joseph

A consultant ophthalmic surgeon who came back to the Garden Route after a refractive fellowship in Dublin, to offer that same standard of laser and lens surgery in Knysna.

The same platform he used in Europe

Dr Dylan Joseph completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pretoria. In the years that followed he worked in communities across most provinces in South Africa, before specialising in ophthalmology.

He qualified from the University of the Free State, cum laude, and won the Dean’s medal for the postgraduate medical student with the highest marks in the faculty. He holds the fellowship of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa, and is registered as a specialist ophthalmic surgeon in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

From 2017 to 2019 he trained in refractive, lens, and cataract surgery at the Wellington Eye Clinic in Dublin with Mr Arthur Cummings. He was involved in the first clinical use of Streamlight, a no-touch surface laser treatment, presented with Mr Cummings at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Barcelona in 2018, and again at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery that year.

Knysna

A full WaveLight suite on the Garden Route

He came home to practise at the Advanced Health Surgical Centre in Knysna, on the same class of laser platform he used in Dublin. The clinic runs one of two full WaveLight refractive suites in South Africa. LASIK here is bladeless.

He offers Contoura Vision LASIK, shaped to the contour of the individual cornea, with the aim of sharper contrast in different lighting. Alongside laser, his lens work centres on extended-depth-of-focus and trifocal intraocular lenses, used to reduce dependence on distance glasses, reading glasses, or both, when the eye is suitable.

Whether the operation is refractive or cataract surgery, the stated aim is the best visual result that eye can reasonably reach, explained before anyone is booked.

The practice

A clinic built around the consultation

Patients often mention the same sequence: a long explanation, measurements on screen, and a recording or written note of what was discussed. The team around that visit includes the clinical assistants and the front desk, who handle the booking, the drops, and the reviews.

Dr Joseph also teaches. He has given CPD talks to optometrists and general practitioners in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Dublin, covering dry-eye classification, biometry after previous laser, and newer intraocular lenses. Glaucoma work includes the iStent, after physician training in Armenia in 2014, and early South African data presented to the South African Glaucoma Society.
